The Tottenham defender scored twice as Spurs extended their winning streak in away games in the Premier League and delivered the Toffees their initial loss at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at the dockside location, having left Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the conclusion of last season.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman pounced twice from corners in the first half to place their impressive record at risk, and they were failed to turn it around before the midfielder - assisted by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - nodded in a third to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender believed he had equalized the scores a short while after Van de Ven's opener, directing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

Beto, meanwhile, failed to convert a handful of chances, while Vicario made a series of fine saves to guarantee Tottenham went five away games without defeat in the English top flight.

But the VAR intervened, advising Craig Pawson to check the goal on the pitchside monitor and the official decided that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win moves Thomas Frank's side into third place in the division, five points off local foes and leaders Arsenal.

Everton remain in 14th position and sit half a dozen points ahead of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven fulfils role at each end of the field

After a drab midweek performance in the European competition against Monaco, where they managed a only two shots on goal, Frank opted for Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The new arrival was unable to influence the game before being substituted for the substitute after an hour on the pitch, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the end.

Defender the Dutchman converted into an offensive threat to be feared.

Spurs' first goal came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball back across the face of goal for an free Van de Ven to head home.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as captain in the Argentine's absence - added his next goal in added time as he outjumped the England keeper to head home.

The Dutchman was equally outstanding in defensive duties, partnering well with his defensive colleague as the duo handled excellently with the numerous deliveries sent their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Toffees missing finishing touch

The club's recent stadium had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the freshness may have worn off somewhat and supporters flocked to the exits after the midfielder's final goal for Tottenham.

The end in Everton's winning streak at home will not be a massive worry for the manager, but their attacking woes are.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Everton's pair of established centre-forwards - had netted just a single goal between them before Sunday's outing.

And they were failed to contribute to that miserable tally on a wet and gloomy evening on Merseyside.

Beto's performance was summed up when he chose to bicycle-kick a clear chance from close range, despite having space and opportunity to readjust for a simpler attempt that would have tested Vicario.

The substitute, as well, was unable to influence the game after replacing the starter in the 65th minute.

It was not for a lack of chance. The majority of the home side's offensive moves came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who tirelessly whipped dangerous balls into the Tottenham penalty area.

The Toffees: Moyes' men travel to the Stadium of Light in the top flight on early November at 20:00 GMT.

Spurs: The London club travel to Newcastle's ground on Wednesday, 29 October for their next round League Cup tie against the Magpies.
