In a first day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reimagine” New York City, ushering in “a different age” and an bold commencement to his term.

A Groundbreaking Leader

The new political star, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, is the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the inaugural to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

“A time such as this is rare and even more uncommon is it that the citizens whose hands are upon the levers of change,” Mamdani added.

Ignoring suggestions to temper hopes, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will rule expansively and audaciously.”

Steering by Democratic Socialist Convictions

Mamdani explicitly affirmed his socialist politics. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will lead as one. I will not compromise my principles for worry of being called extreme,” he said to rapturous applause.

The ceremony was a dual event, beginning with a midnight oath-taking in a old subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's election as a victory over the status quo.

An Ambitious Blueprint

Mamdani now begins one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a platform featuring:

• Subsidized daycare
• Fare-free public buses
• A rent freeze for approximately 1 million households
• A pilot of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion price tag of these services may prove difficult to fund. Mamdani has vowed to raise taxes on the wealthiest New Yorkers and big business. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing External Dynamics

The new mayor will deal with apprehension from some members of the Jewish community alarmed by his past comments regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over controversial past tweets.

Mamdani has sought to ease these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a recent meeting between the two was described as surprisingly cordial.

The Basic Challenges of Leadership

Ultimately, New York mayors are judged on their ability in delivering city upkeep: sanitation, curbing the rat infestation, repairing potholes, and making sure smooth subway operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's public safety record, pointing to historically low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with murders reported.

As his work starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a quirky piece of advice about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his address with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
