British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a joint strike targeting an underground arms cache in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK's MoD.

The facility, located using intelligence, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was situated in hills just to the north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a several entry passages leading to the site... early reports are that the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the attack late on Saturday and each participating jet made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established jihadist rule over large swathes of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action underscores British leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with our allies, to stamp out any re-emergence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the minister remarked.

British military aircraft have carried out patrols over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State subsequent to its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank the personnel of the UK armed forces involved in this operation for their professionalism and their bravery," the Defence Secretary commented. "They were part of a great many UK service members on duty over the holidays. This operation, to remove militants who threaten our safety, highlights how our armed forces are prepared to act, all year round, protecting the UK domestically and powerful internationally."

During December, the US military executed what it described as a "massive strike" on IS targets in the country, subsequent to an attack resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN says IS still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Iraq and Syria.
