The United States central bank lowered interest rates on midweek, representing the second reduction in the current year during financial volatility originating from the government closure and trade duties.
Move Comes at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank
The move to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.
Fed Statement Highlights Labor Market Shifts
In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release notes. “Inflation has moved up and stays moderately high.”
Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job
The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.
Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions
The Federal Reserve usually analyzes BLS data to determine labor market conditions, such as the number of new jobs added to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.
The figure of positions added to the economy in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.
Private Data Show Ongoing Slowdown
Though the bureau was set to publish last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its release when the shutdown started. Employment data company ADP reported recently that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand positions in September, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.
“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated recently, a trend he had earlier said comes from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase
Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still released its inflation report for last month that indicated that costs are rising, although gradually. Prices increased three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
