Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was sentenced of plotting a armed takeover in the ninth month and handed more than over two decades in jail, but he was staying under confinement pending appeals.

High Court Judge the presiding justice said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after recent developments came to light.

This included trying to remove his tracking device and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could facilitate a possible escape.

Court Filing Details Flight Fears

In a filing authorising the detention, Justice Moraes said data from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the one-time head of state's plan to remove the surveillance device to guarantee victory in his getaway".

This, it said, would be assisted by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his offspring.

His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who serves as a legislator, called for a meeting of his supporters near his father's house to take place on Saturday evening.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on online platforms on Friday: "Are you going to fight for your nation, or observe everything from your smartphone there on your couch? I call on you to struggle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so supporters could "pray for his well-being and for the return of democracy in our land."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of the judge's determination was the possibility of Bolsonaro's "relocation to diplomatic missions near the home, considering that the inquiries revealed a history of arranging to seek refuge through a diplomatic representation", a statement said.

The judicial paperwork underscores that the United States embassy in the federal district, the capital city, is located around approximately 13 kilometers from Bolsonaro's home.

Global Responses

Bolsonaro's legal woes have generated frustration from fellow conservative nationalist United States President Donald Trump, causing him to impose a half-rate duty on Brazilian product imports.

He is being held in a Federal Police station in Brasilia and will experience a detention review on the following day.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on the previous day that the his legal team asked the High Court to allow him to serve his whole jail sentence under house arrest, with electronic monitoring.

They also petitioned that he be permitted to leave his home for medical care, saying he required ongoing care for pulmonary infections and other ailments.

Background on Conviction

The former president was determined responsible of heading a conspiracy aimed at retaining his authority after he failed to win the 2022 election to his left-wing rival, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a plan which included plans to murder Lula and his VP candidate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to arrest and execute Alexandre de Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been overseeing Bolsonaro's trial.

The conspiracy was thwarted because it didn't receive the backing of the armed forces officials. Lula was took office without problem on January 1st, 2023.

But a following week, on January 8th, many his backers invaded and destroyed government buildings in the capital, Brasília.

The security forces stepped in and around 1,500 people were arrested.

The magistrates found that the protesters had been incited by him whose plan, they said, was for the Brazilian military to step in, reestablish control and return him to office.

At the period, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the decades-long sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also barred from seeking elected position until the year 2060 - eight years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The former president called the trial a political persecution and said it was aimed at blocking him participating in the 2026 presidential election.
