A bettor earned a substantial sum by predicting the removal of Venezuela's president just before it was publicly declared, leading to inquiries about the possibility of profiting from confidential information of American actions.

Sudden Shift in Wagers

Wagers on Polymarket, a crypto-powered platform, that Nicolás Maduro would be no longer in control by the close of the month increased in the time leading up to President Donald Trump announced on the weekend that the Venezuelan leader had been apprehended.

A single trader, which registered on the site in December and made four bets, all on the Venezuelan situation, earned over $436K from a initial bet of $32.5K.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. The user had only a cryptographic address for identification.

Probability Spikes Before News Break

Market statistics shows that traders put the odds of a political change at just under 7% in the late afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.

However the market's assessment had jumped to 11% by the end of the day and surged in the early hours of January 3rd, pointing to a rapid movement in betting activity right before the official statement was made.

"That trade has all the characteristics of a bet based on inside information," stated Dennis Kelleher.

A handful of other platform users also made significant sums from similar wagers.

Legal Questions Grows

Politicians are beginning to pay attention.

Proposed legislation presented on the start of the week seeks to ban public officials from participating on prediction markets if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a bet.

The Prediction Market Landscape

Forecasting platforms have grown significantly in recent years, with traders able to bet on everything from sports to political events.

Prediction markets encountered regulatory challenges under the previous administration. However it has experienced less resistance during the current presidency.

Insider trading is against the law in the stock market, but there are fewer regulations in the prediction market industry.

An official representative for Kalshi said their site "explicitly prohibits trading on insider information of any form."
